More excitement than I usually get

Yep.  Today was one of those days where there was more excitement than one stay at home mom usually gets in one day.

Alex had piano this morning.  Then we came home and did a "fly lady" over the house so the chores would be done for the day.

Next we loaded up and headed to my brother's house to meet my sister-in-law.  Jake and Alex were heading to camp with their cousins.  We packed all their suitcases and sleeping bags into Lisa's van and I ran Beth, Lucy and Isaac over to Grandma's house.  As I pulled into the driveway at grandma's Lisa called and said her van wouldn't start.

After dropping off the littler ones I went back over to Lisa's and we loaded the Suburban with all the camp gear and headed out.

Jake and Josh were first to be dropped off.  Jake had a stomach ache all morning and was very apprehensive.  Ended up he and Josh were across the hall from each other and Jake was rooming with some boys from the town we live in now.  One of the boys was even from the street we used to live on.  One of Jake's counselor's was from the small town Eric is from.  I'm hoping some of this commonality and familiarity helped Jake relax after we left.

Then we headed over to the girls' dorms.  Camp is held at the college that my parents, siblings, sister-in-law, and I all went to.

Alex, who had been trying to talk me into calling for a refund all day yesterday, seemed to settle in quickly.  She was smiling and giggling as she unpacked.  She, cousins Hannah and Abigail, and a neighbor of Abigail's all were rooming together.

Us mom's left pretty sure they are going to have a great week.

After a Sonic run just before happy hour ended (1/2 price drinks), my sister, Voni, headed back to Topeka and Lisa and I began the 30 minute trek back to Grandma's.

We were about halfway home driving on the "happy hills" road when a huge bird came out of no where.  I was looking at Lisa as she was talking and thought to myself, I wonder if we'll hit that thing.  As I thought it there was a loud thud and crashing sound.  Lisa ducked.  I slammed the brakes.

It sounded like a window had broken but luckily it was just the rear view mirror giving way and shattering.  We stopped the car to assess the damage and as Lisa opened the door were were greeted by a horrid smell.  Apparently the bird had gone number two down the side of my Suburban as we hit him.  Gives new meaning to the saying "scared the cr*p out of it".  :-)

After the initial shock of it all we started rehashing what had happened and we were busting up laughing.  We decided to go back to the scene of the crime and investigate what exactly we hit.  AND, I thought it would be a good idea if we had evidence to report back to Eric since I had already wrecked our "new" Suburban. (I'm surprised we made it this long without some kind of incident)

We turned around and parked close to the area we thought we had hit it.  Following the path of loose feathers blowing in the wind, we began to scower the ditch.  Lisa was armed with her camera so we could document the bird.

After a little searching we found the huge bird, also known as a TURKEY, laying at the edge of a field.  He was big alrighty.  Bravely we walked through the big weed-filled ditch to get a picture of the turkey.  That was until I thought I heard a snake...at which point we both got out of the ditch pretty fast.

But, have no fear.  We may not have gotten pictures of leaving our kids at camp but we DID get pictures of the dead turkey.

And for sure we have pictures of the turkey doo doo and the broken Suburban.

Feather And the last of the evidence...a turkey feather, which survived the rest of the drive home and will hopefully come off at the car wash tomorrow.

The evening was topped of with a house tour and only two kids.  I forgot what it was like to have two kids.

All and all a very exciting day.

The poop on the side of the suburban made me laugh out-loud. And the poor little single feather stuck to the side of the car? Too funny! I'm glad you're ok, though- it could have done some serious damage!
